This weekend, the UTSA Triathlon team heads to Tuscaloosa, Alabama for the National Championship! All of our hard work, countless hours spent training on the track, on the trails, on the hills and in the pool have been put in towards this event. It is a humbling and life-changing experience for all our athletes competing. Thank you to everyone who has donated so far and those who continue to donate to further expand our Tri family.
Hello, Triathlon Supporters!
We want to keep you updated on the journey of this great team. The UTSA Triathlon family competed in the South Mid-Western Regional Championship in Austin this past weekend! This was the first Olympic Distance race of the year and the first Olympic for many of our athletes. We went up the day before the race and camped out at Pace Bend Park, where the race was held. We shared in camaraderie with the other triathlon teams competing as we danced, played Frisbee and shared in our nerves for the race, all the while eating a pasta dinner made by the Arkansas team (UTSA assisted, of course).
The forecast called for rain, but that did not put a damper on our fun and enthusiasm for the race! Mother Nature was fierce, however, as she threw everything at all the athletes competing. A good portion into the bike leg, the race was called off as the rain increased, the winds blew harder and hail began to pound down, creating a hazard for all racers. Luckily, no one was hurt, and we were all able to salvage our bikes and camping gear with only a severe case of being wet. Despite the gruesome weather conditions, somehow, some way it brought the teams, race directors and parents together. Everyone was helping someone and there were tons of last minute volunteers out on the course picking up stragglers.
After the race, we had a big team lunch at a nearby restaurant where we held our new officer inductions! It is team tradition for an old officer to pass on a token to a new officer with a message about the position and responsibility he/she holds. We are excited for what this group of great athletes and greater people can do; we know that they will accomplish great things next year! We would also like to pass on our gratitude to the outgoing officer board for their hard work and dedication this past year.
While race day was not ideal, the UTSA Triathlon team was still able to come together for a fun weekend of camping and team bonding. The weekend also showed that when the situation calls for it, we are able to trust in one another and help each other out. It was one “Hail” of a time!
Over the weekend we also reached a milestone in our Launch UTSA campaign: we've reached more than $3,600 in donations for our trip to Nationals! Thank you for your support. We strive daily to make you proud as the premier multisport family at UTSA.
